A common application is to recognize the object placed on a table or on a conveyor belt. A set of known objects which can occur is pre-defined, for example, by providing a complete scan of the object or by providing a CAD model of the object.

The scanner captures the scene and the objects in the scene are matched to the database. Each object is assigned the matching ID or is labelled as unknown (no match to database). This enables various applications as sorting, checking the presence and the desired count of parts according to a BOM list (Bill of materials). It can help to avoid logistic errors in early phase if wrong object is placed on the table, or detect unrelated objects such as clothing left by worker by mistake.
